Miss Virginia Crowned Miss America
The newest Miss America is CARESSA CAMERON, a 22-year-old broadcast journalism major from Virginia. Cameron was crowned the 89th Miss America Saturday night at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas in an event hosted by MARIO LOPEZ and broadcast live on TLC. Miss California KRISTY CAVINDER was first runner-up.
Cameron earned the title Miss America and a 50 thousand dollar scholarship after performing the song "Listen" from the musical Dreamgirls, and advising parents during her interview segment to limit video games and TV for their kids as a way to prevent obesity. Cameron told the audience, quote, "We need to get our kids back outside, playing with sticks in the street like I did when I was little."
Cameron is the first black Miss America since ERICKA DUNLAP in 2005. Her goal is to earn a master's degree and become a TV news anchor.
The panel of judges at this year's Miss America pageant included talk show host RUSH LIMBAUGH, actress VIVICA FOX, former American Idol finalist BROOKE WHITE and gymnast and Dancing With The Stars champ SHAWN JOHNSON.
